Bowness Stud celebrated another major Sydney Pattern Race success when Funstar (3f, Adelaide-Starspangled) managed to cross the finish line first in an enthralling renewal of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

Having the second outing of her initial 3-year-old campaign and only the fourth start of her career, Funstar delivered on all of the promise she had shown since commencing racing when defeating the high-class Kiwi invader Probabeel and the boom Sydney filly Libertini in a memorable three-way climax to the coveted black-type event.

In so doing, Funstar became the second Group winner produced by the Danehill mare Starspangled following the Classic winning season of her three-quarter sister Youngstar (BRC Queensland Oaks-G1, The Roses-G2).

Bred by long-standing clients John and Karen Sheather, Funstar was consigned by Bowness Stud at the 2018 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and sold to Anton Koolman Bloodstock for $80,000. Saturday’s success took her earnings to $248,100 from less than a handful of starts, and established the talented filly as a tremendously valuable breeding prospect in the process.

Funstar was born, reared, raised and sold by Bowness Stud, and as such is the latest graduate of the farm to reach very heady heights. Group 1 winners Trapeze Artist and Youngstar have set the benchmark with their elite level of performance in recent seasons and there are many good judges predicting that Funstar can emulate the dynamic duo during the course of her own 3-year-old campaign.
