Another Group 1 race, another outstanding result for Bowness Stud. Saturday’s $500,000 Flight Stakes at Royal Randwick became the latest Group 1 feature won by a Bowness Stud graduate when Funstar turned in an authoritative front-running performance to record her maiden success at the highest level of domestic thoroughbred racing.

Born on our property, and subsequently reared, raised and sold by our team, Funstar joined a growing list of elite winners with Bowness Stud very much in their make-up — four-time Group 1 winner Trapeze Artist being the obvious standout, as well as Funstar’s Classic winning three-quarter sister Youngstar.

The first-crop daughter of Coolmore Australia sire Adelaide (by Galileo) is now already the winner of four races and $540,100 from just five career starts after being purchased by her group of owners for just $80,000.

Such was the nature of Funstar’s Flight Stakes success, multiple premiership winning trainer Chris Waller confidently predicted: “She is the real deal. It was her first Group 1 but won’t be her last Group 1.” Winning jockey James McDonald also said that the brilliant 3-year-old filly was a “star in the making”.

For the record, Funstar is raced by a group of owners that include her breeders, John and Karen Sheather, as well as Anton Koolman Bloodstock Pty Ltd, Mr O A Koolman, Mr A G J Koolman, Archer Racing, Mrs C J Inglis, Mrs J Minahan, Mr G J Minahan, Mr R Atra, Mrs K J Shadbolt, Mr P C Shadbolt, Sir David Edward Christian Racing, Miss R Bowry and Unifaith Bloodstock.

Bowness Stud extends its congratulates to all of the connections of Funstar and waits with eager anticipation regarding her future racing program. Though Saturday’s Flight Stakes victory saw her name added to an honour roll that includes some of the most celebrated fillies to have raced in Australia over the past 70 years, it’s widely believed that her best racing days are still very much still to come.
